That's perhaps no surprise if you heard director Edgar Wright's recent interview with BBC Radio 1's Edith Bowman in which he mentions that he used WhoSampled as a resource while researching the soundtrack.īelow we select our highlights and shine some light (no spoilers) on some of the references within the soundtrack: The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's 'Bellbottoms' is ready made car chase music and sets the tone for the fast-paced sequences that appear throughout the movie. The film is almost entirely scored by the music Baby listens to on his headphones as the story unfolds and the eclectic tastes of this central character create an enticing playlist which includes numerous sampled classics and even some clever internal references.

In fact the movie itself takes its name from Simon & Garfunkel's track of the same name (and that track is of course featured on the soundtrack).įor those yet to see the film, the action follows the life of 'Baby' (played by Ansel Elgort), a character whose early life experience has left him with a deep attachment to music. The film is littered with subtle visual and musical references pieced together with an attention to detail that gives the movie the feel of a great mixtape.
An all-star cast, slick action sequences and entertaining dialog all play a valuable role in making ' Baby Driver' a future classic, but it's the fact that all those elements revolve around a killer soundtrack that really makes the movie something special.
